It’s that time of year again. Summer is on the wane, and fall is showing up with cool mornings and a special feeling in the air. The elk are bugling, and the rivers are cooling into perfect temperatures for the local trout.
If you haven’t considered visiting during fall in Western Montana, consider a few highlights we have to offer.
• The summer crowds have thinned, and access to recreation is easier.
• Cooler temperatures in fall mean mountain biking and fishing, for example, are prime. Trailheads and boat launches will have fewer cars, meaning more space for you! Fall is also archery season; I tell people, throw up a stick and head the way it points, and you won’t be disappointed.
• Golf courses are prepping for winter, and most folks have had their fill, so getting tee times can be easier, unless we get "2nd Summer" when temps get really hot again and everyone scrambles for that last round.
• It’s a great time to show up and get a feel for mountain living. A lot of folks make the mistake of only visiting one season, but I'd recommend visiting in late fall/early winter and deciding if the climate suits your style.
• Go to a UM Griz game or catch the end of the Paddleheads baseball season. Both are great family fun.
• Birding is ramping up as many species visit local hotspots before they fly south.
• Visit the farmers’ markets around the area. Many run through September.
• Hike! So many trails, so many miles. From the Flathead to the Pintlers, there are so many fantastic opportunities to see some fall colors. Carry bear protection; it's that time of year.
• Or just relax, get a place to stay, and hang out. Grab a bite or beer and just enjoy the mountain.
Until next time!
